I’m still working on finding *THE* biscuit recipe that I remember my grandmother making as a kid. Next up, is a fast food copycat biscuit recipe my grandmother had in her recipe stash. You know the one I’m talking about – the fast food chain that has burgers and chicken on their menu – and a star on their logo. Yep. That’s the copycat recipe I’m talking about. Today let’s make Grandma’s Copycat Biscuits with a hack on making your own buttermilk!
To be quite honest with y’all, I feel like it’s weird she even had a copycat biscuit recipe written down. I don’t know why, but it just seems like she wouldn’t have been interested in trying a copycat biscuit recipe back then. I’ve had biscuits from this fast food chain before and while they’re delicious and fluffy, they never once reminded me of my grandmother’s biscuits. But to solve the mystery, I have to bake through all her biscuit recipes, so that’s what I did! So far we’ve made Grandma’s Southern Mayonnaise Biscuits and Grandma’s Southern Honeydew Biscuits already.
Now we’re moving on to recipe number three with Grandma’s Copycat Biscuits and a homemade buttermilk recipe! On the back of this particular recipe card, she wrote down how to make her own buttermilk. Obviously, buttermilk is pretty important when making biscuits, so this hack from my grandma to make your own is great if you don’t have any buttermilk on hand and also can save you money. Note: I didn’t make my own buttermilk for these biscuits because I already had some in the refrigerator that needed to be used.
To make your own buttermilk: Mix together 1 cup milk and 1/2 teaspoon of Vinegar. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
Grandma just knew her way around the kitchen, and as I’ve discovered on baking through her biscuit recipes, not everything was written down. So it’s just been a process of trial and error over here baking through and deciphering her biscuit recipes.
Connecting & Remembering
But you know, I feel like this journey has somehow connected me to her. I just have this visual picture in my head: she’s sitting in front of the tv – with her little bulldog, Oreo, sitting in her lap – writing down all of these recipes on index cards. The same recipe cards that I would bake through many, many years later. Reading through these recipe cards has made me wonder a lot of things about her and wish I knew more.
Did she ever actually make the biscuits on these recipe cards? Or did she write it down to try someday and it never happened? Who gave her this recipe? Was this recipe something she enjoyed as a little girl? Did she ever make any of these recipes for my Daddio? Which recipe did she like to make the most? Did she know how much I loved her biscuits? Well, that last question – I’m pretty sure she knew how much I loved the biscuits. Since that was pretty much all I ate! 😉
