These DIY floating candles are cheap and easy to make for Halloween.🕯️ Plus they are spooky and festive for your Halloween decor! 👻 I even made some extra ones for a spooktacular centerpiece!
Happy Augtober! From now through Halloween, every Thursday will be FALLOWEEN here on Sweet Southern Oaks!!🦇🎃👻🍁 I’ll share a fun and festive fall or Halloween diy that you can put together this fall.
First up on our FALLOWEEN series are these DIY Floating Candles. 🕯️ I dreamed these up -quite literally – in my sleep. So I had to get up and draw out the idea.

All you need for these DIY Floating Candles are toilet paper/ paper towel rolls, black paint or spray paint, hot glue, fishing line and battery powered tea lights. By using the toilet paper rolls, this diy comes in for a pretty cheap project this fall! Plus you’re reusing something that other wise would just end up in the landfill. That makes this project a win in my book!
DIY Floating Candles Supplies:
- Toilet Paper or Paper Towel Rolls (I used a variety of each)
- Black Paint or Black Spray Paint
- Fishing Line & Scissors
- Hot Glue & Glue Gun
- Battery Powered Tea Lights
- Command Hooks
How to Make DIY Floating Candles:
- Collect your toilet paper and paper towel rolls to use for this project. I used a variety of each to add interest to the floating candles.
- Spray paint the toilet paper and paper towel rolls. I used some old gardening gloves while spraying the rolls. You could use black paint on the rolls instead – which would be fun for your kids to do!
- Once the rolls are dry, create a candle dripping effect with hot glue. Simply run the hot glue around the circle of the roll and down the sides. It doesn’t have to look perfect – just run the glue down to create the dripping candle effect. Let the hot glue dry.
- Next, hot glue the battery powered tea lights into the toilet paper and paper towel rolls. Let the hot glue dry.
- Meanwhile, prepare the fishing line. Cut out different lengths of the fishing line for varying heights of the floating candles.
- Hot glue both ends of the fishing line onto the toilet paper and paper towel rolls. You want to create a loop like handle with the fishing line in order to hang the rolls from the ceiling.
- Place the command hooks on the ceiling. Then hang the fishing line loops onto the command hooks.
- Now you’re all set for a festive and spooky Halloween backdrop!
How to Turn the Battery Powered Lights Off and On:
I would recommend using remote battery powered tea lights for this project. All things considered, having a remote would make this project so much easier! I did not have the tea lights with a remote for my project. What I ended up using was a pen and a kabob skewer to turn the battery powered tea lights off and on.🤣 For the toilet paper rolls, they were pretty easy to stick a pen inside of it to turn the tea lights off and on. The paper towel rolls required a little more strength to turn the lights off and on with. Sounds a little funny, I know. But hey, it works! I would recommend using battery powered tea lights with a remote for this project.
These DIY Floating Candles are so fun to make and they make a festive backdrop for the Halloween decor in the dining room. 🕯️Check back on Thursday for the next diy in our FALLOWEEN series! Happy Falloween! 🍂👻🎃
