I really wanted this office space to feel completely different than the rest of my home. I wanted the office to be a quiet place that I could work and be inspired. A place where Sweet Southern Oaks can grow and dreams are made. The jewel tone color palette is more bold than what I’m use to. But pushing the boundaries and trying new things is what makes decorating so fun! And here I am, inspired by all the fun colors and Boho vibes in this home office makeover.
Now, let’s get to all the deets… because that’s really why you’re here! 😊
Let’s take a look at the very scary BEFORE photo:
Yeah… we never did anything to this space, so it became a dumping ground. Especially after the hot water heater flooded our house last year, we piled on even more in here! Check out this reel of the office makeover to see the before photos on Facebook or Instagram.
Painted Built-Ins:
Once the office got cleared out, we painted these beautiful built-ins. These little lovelies are why I chose this house. They were an off-white yellow color when we moved in. With a little cleaning and some paint, their beauty truly shines!
I decorated the built-ins mostly with decor I already had. You know I love to shop the house first! I know they’re probably more “full” than how most people decorate their built-ins. But in my opinion, I prefer to use the space I have because our home is smaller. I know that’s not everyone’s way to decorate the built-ins, and that’s ok.

Hutch Makeover:
Next, it was time to update this dingy old farmhouse hutch. It was in such terrible condition, we ended up having to re-build most of this hutch. We honestly had no idea what we were doing; and were just winging it as we re-built the hutch! 🤣 But hey, it’s still standing! So I call that a win.
I wanted this hutch to be a stand-out focal piece in the office. I decided to go really bold and paint it a beautiful mustard yellow. It turns out that it’s actually kind of hard to find the perfect mustard yellow paint! Who knew?! 🤷♀️Then we updated the hardware to really make the piece pop!

Window Seat Makeover:
I’ve had this little window seat for as long as I can remember. It eventually moved into our house here and we put it in the room that would become the office. I never liked it in there. But now? Well, she’s a beauty! After a little cleaning, paint and new hardware she’s showing off the beauty I knew she could be.

Organized the Bookshelf:
This bookshelf is my husband’s. I’m not a reader, so the majority of the books in here are his. I organized the books by color – rainbow theme, of course! When he came home and saw I re-organized the bookcase the first thing he said was “how am I supposed to know what books I’ve read now?” 🤣 But only pretty rainbow colors and organized matters, right?! Right.
New Rug & Office Chair:
I found this rug last summer when I went shopping with my Mom. I fell in love with all the beautiful colors in it and the fun pattern. In true Ashlee fashion, I had no idea where or what I was going to do with the rug. But naturally I bought it anyway! 😂 As it turned out, this rug and the velvet pink office chair were the inspiration pieces to inspire the rest of the home office makeover.
Can you even believe that I found this rug at an Ollie’s discount store?! It is by Dynamic Rugs, but since it was a discount find, I can’t find a link for you. However, here is a beautiful rug that is similar.

New Curtains & Light Fixture:
Ahhh the curtains… the bold, velvet teal curtains color truly makes a huge impact in this space. The curtains are thick, velvet blackout material and are so soft! We did the “see through” test, and you cannot see inside when they’re drawn. They came with a tie, so if I want to draw back the curtains to see outside, I can easily tie them. Plus they keep the room warm or cool, depending on the season.
A new chandelier can drastically update a space. There was a dingy old fan in here before. Now the beaded chandelier shines bright in all her glory. I love the Boho vibes the chandelier adds to the home office.

Accents & Wall Color:
Then all that was left in the home office makeover were a few accent pieces to add. I found the pampas grass at Homegoods and the vases were clearance finds at Hobby Lobby. Pro Tip: make sure you spray the pampas grass with hairspray to keep it from shedding!
Wall Color: Sherwin Williams Sea Salt
