Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
3-D folded paper hearts are just for you!
These 3-D folded paper hearts are so easy to make for Valentine’s Day and they add such a cool element into your holiday decor.
Do y’all remember ever making paper fans in elementary school? Or the paper fortune tellers and you’d play M.A.S.H on them? Those M.A.S.H paper fortune tellers were probably one of my favorite things to make back in the day. You’d play it and see if you’d live in a mansion, apartment, shack or house. And then what career you may have or who you’d marry. I would always hope it would predict Taylor Hanson or Jonathan Taylor Thomas…. oh to be young and a kid again!
Reminiscing of those days while making these 3-D folded paper hearts was so fun! They are really simple to make and something you can easily make with the kids. Just a few cuts and a lot of folded creases create the cutest hearts – perfect for your Valentine’s Day decor.
3-D Folded Paper Hearts Supplies:
- Cardstock or Scrapbook Paper {I used a mix of both}
- Glue Stick
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Plate or Bowl {to create a circle}
How to Make 3-D Folded Paper Hearts:
- Start out with your paper turned horizontally. If you are using scrapbook paper that has a design on it, make sure you are working with the paper turned face side/ design side down.
- Place the plate on the middle of the paper. Use the plate or bowl as a guide to draw a circle onto the cardstock or scrapbook paper.
- Using the scissors, cut out the traced circle.
- Fold the circle in half. Then fold it half once more – so now the paper has been folded into fourths.
- While your paper is still folded into fourths, cut about 1/3 of the paper off along the open edges. You can measure if you’d like, but I just eyeball it.
- Open up your paper and now it will resemble a shape similar to an oval or like a pill capsule. Then lay the paper flat onto your work surface. If you are using a design on the paper, continue to work with the design face side down on the surface.
- You will see the creases from your initial folds when you open up your paper. Fold the first flap in half to the middle of the paper where the crease is. Then repeat the same steps on the other side.
- Then you will begin folding the paper accordion style to the middle of the paper where the crease is. Accordion style folds are small folds, repeated every other way. Just like if you were a making paper fan.
- Repeat the accordion folds on the other side of the paper.
- Finally, with the accordion folds you will end up with a long, narrow line.
- Fold the line in half – you will see the crease in the middle – and create a V shape. You’ll begin to see how this is going to turn into a heart.
- Using the glue stick, place a little glue onto one side.
- Finally, bring both sides together. Pinch and hold both sides together for a second so the glue will adhere.
- There’s your 3-D folded paper heart!
How to Decorate with 3-D Folded Paper Hearts:
You can hang these 3-D folded paper hearts onto a surface of your home or create a garland out of them. Or you could put fishing line on them and suspend them from the air! However you choose, they’re sure to look cute! They add lots of dimension and texture to your Valentine’s Day decor.
This is such an easy craft to make with your kids! Once you’ve made a few of these and get the hang of it, it’s easy and really fun to make. Use different sized bowls to trace circles and make various sized hearts. The smaller the size of the circle though, the more difficult it is to make. So if you’re making this with your kids, I would recommend to use a larger sized bowl.
Happy Valentine’s Day, sweet friends! No matter how you celebrate, I hope you know that you are loved.
