Let’s step up our patriotic decor and tablescapes with these adorable and festive DIY stars and stripes chargers!
It’s time for the monthly blog hop with Jackie and Liz today and this month is all about patriotic decor. I’m so excited to introduce y’all to our special guest blogger joining us today! Let’s welcome my sweet friend, Shanna at Our Military Home Front. As you’ve probably guessed, Shanna is a military wife and artist! She lives in base housing and uses temporary design ideas to turn each base house into a home that she and her family loves. So if you’re living in an apartment or a rental, she’s one to follow with her temporary DIY home solutions! She has a dreamy antique farmhouse vibe with lots of woods and whites and I know you’re going to love her style!
Now, let’s get our patriotic party decor on with these dollar store DIY stars and stripes chargers! This is fun project that you can make just in time for your 4th of July festivities. I got my chargers from the dollar store – you can’t beat a dollar store craft!
Dollar Store DIY Stars and Stripes Chargers Supplies:
- 4-6 Chargers
- Red, White and Blue Spray Paint: I used Rustoleum
- Painters Tape
- Star Stickers or Star Window Cling Decals (I got mine from the dollar spot at Target and used gel star window clings)
- White Paint/ Small Paint Brush, Optional
How to Make Dollar Store DIY Stars and Stripes Chargers:
- Wipe the chargers down with a cloth or paper towel to make sure you are starting with a clean surface.
- Evenly coat each charger with white spray paint. Let the chargers dry completely overnight. It’s important to let the white spray paint dry overnight to adhere to the surface of the chargers. I didn’t wait and had to redo the chargers with the stripes because the paint had not quite set in and came off when I pulled the tape. Ugh! Learn from my mistake here! 🙂
- After the chargers have dried completely overnight, it’s time to make your stars and stripes! Decide how many chargers you will turn into the stars and how many will be stripes. I had four chargers, so I have two of each pattern.
-
For the Stars:
Evenly place the star stickers or window cling decals on the chargers. Make sure to also place some star stickers or window cling decals around the edges of the chargers. When you like the arrangement of the stars, now it’s time to spray paint the chargers blue. Evenly spray one blue coat of spray paint onto the chargers and let them dry completely. When dry, carefully lift the stickers or window cling decals used from the chargers to reveal your stars. NOTE: the dye in the star gel clings melted a little on my project from the heat. This left a soft red and blue shadow around some of the stars, but I kind of liked that affect. If you don’t like that, add a little white paint and touch up the stars.
-
For the Stripes:
Use the painters tape to carefully make even stripes onto the chargers. Firmly press the painters tape down and smooth it out so the paint does not bleed on the chargers. Then evenly spray one red coat of spray paint onto the chargers and let it dry completely. Then carefully and SLOWLY peel the painters tape from the chargers to reveal your stripes. I found it easier to slowly pull the painters tape from left to right, kind of going in the opposite direction I sprayed the paint. NOTE: You may have some paint lift from the chargers when you peel off the tape. If that happens, you can touch up those places with some white paint and a brush. I had to do this with my chargers.
- Decorate your tablescape using your new, festive chargers!
It’s important to note that these chargers are not food safe. You’ll need to use clear, plastic disposable plates on top off your patriotic chargers at your meal.
These dollar store DIY Stars and Stripes Chargers were fun to make and are going to look so cute on my patriotic tablescape this year! More on that coming soon!

I don’t know if it’s just my love for good deals but I’ve always felt chargers are expensive – updating these dollar store ones is perfect to save some money and have adorable chargers for a holiday tablescape!

I had no idea dollar store carried chargers. Someday I’ll do a table scape and this is where I’ll pick some chargers up from. They seem very versatile on how you can decorate them. I love your patriotic touches to yours.

Right?! It’s a best kept secret they carry them! Can’t wait to see your one day tablescape!
