I’m teaming up with the ladies of the Sweet Moda Blog Project and this week our theme is coffee filters. I love how fun this coffee filter garland is hanging over our vintage door headboard.
A window display at a local boutique store is the inspiration behind this coffee filter garland. The garland in the display was made out of coffee filters and scrapbook paper; I just remember loving how fun and unique the garland was and thinking I should make something similar. That time is now!
The cool thing about this project is that you probably already have all the supplies on hand. You only need coffee filters, scissors and some kind of ribbon or string.
Coffee Filter Garland Materials:
- Coffee Filters
- Yarn, Ribbon or Twine (Fishing line or any of ribbon would work)
- Scissors
- Old Book Pages or Scrapbook Paper (Optional)
How to Make a Coffee Filter Garland:
- First, take a stack of about fifty coffee filters and flatten them out. (*Note: If you are using old book pages or scrapbook paper: you’ll cut a circle shape out of the book pages or scrapbook paper (use the coffee filter as your guide) and add the circles to your stack of coffee filters first.
- Fold the stacks of coffee filters in half and cut a small hole in the middle with the scissors. Repeat this step about five or six times with each stack of coffee filters.
- Next, I cut my yarn to thread through the filters. You could use fishing line or any other kind of string you may have around the house. Pull the string through each stack of coffee filters and make a knot at each end. Tying a knot at each end will help the filters from sliding to close together.
- Repeat this step with each stack of coffee filters.
- Hang the coffee filter garland up, then separate each filter. Crumple the separated filters and then fluff them.
- Keep crumpling, twisting and fluffing each filter until you get the desired look of fluffy flowers. Coffee filters are very sturdy!
Where to Use a Coffee Filter Garland:
The coffee filter garland lends that shabby chic farmhouse look once it’s complete. Oh, and they do make the natural colored coffee filters that have that perfect vintage look you could use, too! I hung mine over our headboard, but you could also drape it on a mantel or a china cabinet to be used as decor. If you’re planning a baby shower or a bridal shower the coffee filter garlands would make fun and unique decor. For example, dying the coffee filters with a little food coloring to match the shower colors first looks really pretty! I just love the fluffy flower look!
