You’ve cooked the meal and now you have an empty glass food jar. What do you do with it? Don’t throw it away just yet! I have an easy project for spring using those old glass jars! Today we’re going to learn how to tint a glass jar to get the vintage look! Trust me when I tell you this is an easy DIY you can do with the kiddos to create a beautiful spring tablescape or Easter vignette.
I’m teaming up with my friends for the Sweet Moda Blog Project today and our theme for the week is glass jars. I’m a big fan of recycling because we only get one planet. Whenever I use up a jar of salsa or spaghetti sauce, I save the glass jar to use for later.
I’ve actually been hoarding random glass jars for awhile now, and when I was cleaning out my Monica Closet they made the final cut becuase I knew I’d eventually use them for the blog. Well my friends, the day has come and those glass salsa jars have turned into beautiful, vintage inspired tinted glass for spring. The best part about this project is that you probably have all the materials needed to tint these glass jars!
Clean the Jars and Remove the Labels
The first thing you want to do is to clean the jars and remove the labels. Fill your sink up with hot water and Dawn dish liquid and let the jars soak for a few minutes. After the jars soak in the dish liquid solution, the labels will easily peel off. Make sure there is no sticky residue left behind – I needed to use a little finger nail polish to get the sticky part off of my jars. Let them dry completely.

Supplies Needed:
- Mason Jar or Recyled Glass Food Jar
- Modpodge (this is your glue)
- Food Coloring (I used: red, blue, green and yellow)
- Paint Brush
- Old Bowl
- Water
How to Tint a Glass Jar:
- Clean the glass jars and remove the labels.
- Mix together about 2- 3 drops of food coloring, a squirt or two of modpodge and a little bit of water. If you use an assortment of food coloring, you will repeat the same steps for each color. I found that if the mixture is a little runny, it goes on better.
- Use a paint brush to evenly apply the food coloring mixture. Brush from top to bottom and let the mixture set for a few minutes before applying a second coat. On my jars, a few of them appeared to have small streaks. Don’t worry, they’ll dry just fine! 😉
- Set the jars upside down on wax paper and let them dry completely over night.
- Once the glass jars are dry fill them with flowers for a pretty Easter centerpiece.
No DIY is pretty in the beginning, but I did have to take a before picture of my glass food jars and the steps I took to create my vintage inspired tinted glass jars for you!
