Happy Thanksgiving! Today on the blog I’ve got a fall garland backdrop with a 3-D twist, that you can keep in your back pocket for next year!
I recently threw my sister a fall themed baby shower and I created this fall garland backdrop for the shower. If you follow me on Instagram, I explained how I created the fall garland backdrop on my stories. It’s on my saved highlights under “Fall Baby Shower” if you want to check it out! I was trying to do the stories quick {because I had to finish the final preparations for the shower!} so I didn’t get to fully explain the whole process. I got so many DMs about it, so I decided I needed to write a blog post!
To make this 3-D harvest backdrop, you will need to take a walk around your yard and collect two large sticks. Yep, we’re looking to nature for this cool 3-D effect. Mr. Sweet Southern Oaks listens to my nutty creative ideas and he is the logistics part/ behind the scenes of the blog. So, ideas pop in my head and I tell him when I think of them. I dreamed up this little project in my head and then I proudly exclaimed to him that we’d need to look for some big sticks in the yard. He’s so cute because the next day he found two big sticks in the backyard, brought them in and asked if it would work for my idea. They were exactly what I was thinking! He just gets me.
Okay, so back to making the 3-D harvest garland backdrop. It really is easier to make than you think! So stay with me and I’ll try to explain it better than I did in my stories. To make it easy for you, I have included a few affiliate links for you to shop for this project! You can read my full disclosure policy here.
3-D Harvest Backdrop Materials
- 2 large sticks from your backyard
- Clear Coat Spray Paint (I used Rust-Oleum Matte Clear)
- Fall Garland Leaves (It doesn’t matter if they don’t match because we’re going to spray paint them)
- 1-2 cans of Spray Paint in the color of your choice (I used Rust-Oleum in Copper and Krylon Matte Gold. You could use just one color)
- Command Hooks
- Fishing Line
- Scissors
How to Make a 3-D Fall Harvest Backdrop
Step One: After you have found the two large sticks from your backyard, spray a few coats clear coats on all sides of the sticks and let it dry. You want to do this to seal the branches that have been exposed to outside elements.
Step Two: On a cardboard surface, lay out your fall garlands and lightly spray each side with your choice of spray paint. I actually left some of the autumn colors peaking through the fall garlands because I liked the variation of color. You may remember that I spray painted my pumpkins and fall garlands gold last year; so I used the same technique. Let the fall leaf garlands dry completely.
Step Three: Meanwhile, place the Command Hooks on the area you want to hang the 3-D harvest backdrop. You can put the Command Hooks on the ceiling and have the back drop suspended from the air. Or you could kind of make a curtain, which is what I did. So I put the Command Hooks on the top of the window seal. I used about six Command Hooks to make sure the weight of the branches wouldn’t pull them down. You want the Command Hooks to adhere to the surface before hanging the branches, so you’ll need to let them set for at least an hour or more before hanging anything on the hooks.
Step Four: Use the scissors to cut pieces of fishing line and then wrap the line around the sticks. Make sure the fishing line is wrapped tightly on each Command Hook. The picture below will help you see what I mean. Can you see the fishing line wrapped around the branch and the Command Hooks?
Step Five: Use the fishing line to wrap around the leaf garland hooks (the circle part–whatever that is!) and then hang each line around the branch. If you want to cover up the Command Hooks, you can use a hole punch and leaves. Simply punch a hole in the leaf and hang on top of the Command Hook!
I don’t know if any of that made sense… words are hard sometimes! Anyway, I’m sorry I didn’t get this up faster for you to make one for your Thanksgiving feast this year. I’m a day late and a dollar short these days, but there’s always next year! Wishing you all a happy and blessed Thanksgiving! I’m truly thankful for all of my Sweet Southern Oaks buddies!
