I have gotten so many emails and messages after posting how to paint kitchen cabinets and y’all wanted to know if I changed out the hardware. My secret is out: it’s spray paint! Yep. Everyone thought we got new hardware! Spray painted hardware couldn’t get any easier for a DIY and they look brand new! Let’s learn how to spray paint hardware!
While new hardware would be nice, it’s not like we had a couple hundred bucks to buy new hardware. Of course I couldn’t ignore the aged, chippy bronze hardware and put them back on the freshly painted kitchen cabinets either. That’s when I had the idea of spray painting the hardware. I spray painted the dated bronze hardware with a flat black spray paint and primer, which helped to transform the kitchen cabinets entirely.
Here’s a close up of what the hardware looked like before…
Now here is what the hardware looks like. Looks new, right?!
Spray Painted Hardware Materials:
- Degreaser
- Old Rags & Gloves
- Spray Paint + Primer in one (I used Rustoleum Paint + Primer in Flat Black)
- Clear Coat (I used Rustoleum Matte Clear Enamel)
- Old box
Spray Painted Hardware Directions:
- Wearing gloves, use old rags to clean the hardware with a degreaser. Let the hardware dry. The degreaser is going to take off any grease or grime built up on the hardware over the years. The paint will not adhere to any sticky surface, so make sure you clean the hardware.
- Place the hardware and hinges in a cardboard box. Lightly spray the hardware with the spray paint.
- Let the hardware dry in between coats and before turning over to spray the other side.
- Lightly spray the other side of the hardware. I did two to three coats for each side. Let the hardware dry completely.
- Lightly spray the clear coat on all sides of the hardware and let it dry completely.
- Once the hardware is dry hang your cabinets back up with your fresh, spray painted hardware!
In full disclosure, we did buy new decorative black nails for the hardware that you can see on the cabinet hinges. We were afraid the paint would chip off the painted nails when reinstalling the hardware with the drill. You can try spray painting the nails also, or you can buy new ones from your local home improvement store. Hey, I’d rather buy several packs of nails that matched for about $20 bucks than spend hundreds on new hardware! 😉 With a little spray paint, you can transform your outdated hardware for a sleek and modern look.
