Hip, hip, hooray! It’s reveal day for the $100 Room Challenge! The $100 Room Challenge was just that- a challenge- a fun one! I decided on a farmhouse style bathroom and I love the end result! With a budget of $100 dollars and one month to update one room, several other bloggers and I got together to share our projects with y’all! It was a fun challenge that I’m sure inspired you to get creative with a room in your house!
The key to the $100 Room Challenge is to use items you already have to stretch the dollar. To recycle old materials and give new life to dreary pieces. I love the whole idea behind the challenge because we all have random pieces of decor in storage or maybe even some left over paint in the basement! If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw some behind the scenes of all the projects going on for the $100 Room Challenge. Now it’s finally time to show you the full reveal!!
My goal for the $100 Room Challenge was to update our small bathroom in the master bathroom. I wanted a little bit of a rustic, farmhouse feel for the bathroom with a pop of color and burst of metallic. If you know me, you know I love copper and soft aquas… which is how this vision came to life.
Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4
Before we dive in, let’s check out one more before picture…
Painted Bathroom Vanity: Copper & Aqua
Mr. Sweet Southern Oaks wasn’t sure about my choice of copper hardware with the light aqua color on the cabinets. Probably because it’s not a combination that’s been done before, so he couldn’t see my vision. I like to think outside of the box and sometimes get carried away with a crazy, creative idea. So, I just go for it and see if it works (that is what DIY/ home decor bloggers do after all, right?). I figured if I didn’t like the copper hardware, I could always spray it another color.
Or it would be a beautiful, creative outcome…just like the vision in my head.
You haven’t seen light aqua and copper paired together…
Until now. 😉
New trend alert: copper and aqua! I’m in LOVE with the dark, copper hardware paired with the soft, light aqua cabinets. AQUA + COPPER totally works.
What does Mr. Sweet Southern Oaks think about the color combo now, you ask? Ummm, he loves it!! (Insert confetti toss here!) The paint color I used for the bathroom vanity is Sherwin Williams Waterscape. We only needed a quart of paint for the vanity. To save a little money, I had them use the Valspar brand and mix the SW Waterscape color in. They have all the paint numbers, so going with a cheaper brand is a great way to save a little money.
Lighting
I hated the light fixture above the bathroom mirror. It wasn’t in the budget to update the light fixture, so we removed the bulb shades, only exposing the light bulbs. In place of the regular light bulbs, we went with Edison bulbs. I like the Edison bulbs better… but one day I’m going to get a new light fixture!
Framed Bathroom Mirror
Another project we did was frame out the builder grade bathroom mirror. Framing out the mirror made the builder grade one look ten times better! It is the first thing you see when you enter the bathroom, so it added the perfect farmhouse style bathroom look! You can learn how to frame out a bathroom mirror HERE.
Open Shelves
Open shelves were the perfect farmhouse style bathroom DIY. I decided on open shelving to hang on the walls to provide extra storage. Open shelves were just what that space needed and I love the character they’ve added to the area. You can read all about how to build open shelving HERE.
Whitewashed Wood
Since I was going for the rustic, farmhouse style bathroom, I decided a whitewashed wood would look pretty for the open shelves and the framed bathroom mirror. All you need for this project is white paint and water. I used some left over white paint I already had for this project and you can find the whitewashed wood tutorial HERE.
Farmhouse Style Bathroom Total Cost
Framed Bathroom Mirror: $30.95
Open Shelves: $22.33 (for wood and 4 brackets)
Vanity Paint + Primer: $25.96
Hardware: Free! (I used a can of copper spray paint I already had with the original hardware)
Whitewash Materials: Free! (I used left over white paint to make this technique free!)
Edison Bulbs: Free! (I already them at our house)
Miscellanoues Materials: $9.52
Decor: $10.40 (The only items I bought were the two clear glass jars, everything else I already had! )
Total Spent: $99.16
As you can see, you don’t need a big budget to update a room in your house. All you need is to set a budget and stick to it. With a little creativity and using items you may already have around the house, you can update one room in your house with a small budget.

Ahhh…. I ALMOST spray painted our hardware copper as well because I already had a can of copper spray paint, but it looked too dark against the navy. I am SO glad you went for it. I love the look of copper anything. Thank you so much for participating in September’s $100 Room Challenge!!!

I love copper and aqua! Your cabinets look a lot like mine. I’m slowly making my way through the house, painting one vanity at a time. Love the framed mirror too!
