I finally painted my porch swing! When I decided I wanted to paint the front porch swing, the weather had other plans and a tropical storm was heading our way. That meant that I had to wait another week to paint the swing…but good things do come to those who wait! I’ve been getting my porch ready for front porch sittin’ and this project made for a huge transformation. Let’s chat about how to paint a porch swing.
I’ve even had several neighbors stop me to say that they love the new color of the porch swing and the happy pop of yellow. If I can paint it by myself, so can you!
Materials Needed:
- Equal parts of Water and Vinegar
- Old Rags & Gloves
- Large Bucket
- Sandpaper (I used Medium Grit Sandpaper)
- Quart of Exterior Semi-Gloss Paint (Color of your choice)
- Paint Brush & Paint Tray
- Drop Cloth
How to Paint a Porch Swing:
- Place the swing onto a drop cloth to catch any paint drippings. This will become your work area.
- In a large bucket, mix together equal parts of water and vinegar. Dip the old rags into the vinegar water solution to clean the swing. I’d wear gloves. Wipe it down well– get all of the years of dirt and grime off of the swing and let it dry. Let me tell you, this was the gross part…and I may have gagged a little while I was cleaning the swing. I also wiped down the chains to the swing. Discard the old rags after use.
- While the swing is drying, lightly sand it with medium grit sandpaper. Make sure you wipe off any dust left on the swing before painting so the paint will adhere to the surface.
- I found that it would have been easier if I had started painting the bottom of the swing because of the little crevices. Lesson learned…so learn from my mistake and paint the bottom of the swing first. While it’s flipped over, you can paint the bottom and you’ll still be able to paint the front part of the swing with the first coat. Let it dry. Exterior paint dries pretty fast and it was hot outside, so this didn’t take long for the first coat to dry.
- Make sure the paint is dry before you flip it over to paint the back side of the swing. Let it dry.
- Apply 2-3 more coats of paint. Make sure you have painted all of the crevices well and that you have evened out any drips with your paint brush.
- Let the swing dry completely overnight.
- Hang the swing back up, decorate and enjoy your new swing!
That’s how to paint a porch swing the easy way. It only took me a couple of hours, the cost of the paint and my new pillows to totally transform my porch swing. I always talk about the power of paint, but it is an affordable way to make something beautiful again. The paint color that I used for my front porch swing is exterior, semi-gloss paint by Sherwin- Williams and is called “Bohemian Lace“. It’s a bright, pure white color and it doesn’t have any yellow undertones. This is my favorite white!
I might add some cafe lighting to the porch later, but for now, just updating the swing made me want to actually sit on the porch! So now that you know how to paint a porch swing, the question is, are you inspired to paint yours?! Let me know!
Now my porch is ready to “swing” into summer. 😉
