I covered the pillows on my porch to get ready for July 4th entertaining! The best part is that it cost me about $10.00 to get the front porch ready for some BBQ! So let’s chat about how to cover a pillow without sewing and check out my July 4th porch reveal!
I recently updated my front porch with new pillows and I painted the swing. I went with a lemon summer yellow color that just says “summer”– check that out HERE. I didn’t want to spend much on decorating a July 4th front porch, but I did want it to be festive for the occasion. You know, just in case Mr. Southern Oaks and I decide to eat BBQ in the sweltering 100+ degree Alabama heat on the porch…. it will be ready! Instead of buying new pillows, I decided I would pin patriotic fabric on top of the pillows. I went with two fabrics: a solid navy and an off-white with red stars. This combo seemed a little vintage to me…and well, you know my vintage loving heart!
The fabric was on sale and I bought a yard of each. I ended up not having enough fabric to cover everything because my pillows were too big. Math is hard, man. 😉
I didn’t want the fabric to bleed into my brand new yellow pillows. I covered them first with white trash bags (and I pulled the ties out) just in case it rained the pillows and seat cushion would be protected from the elements of the crazy Alabama weather. Then it was time to wrap my pillows with the patriotic fabric. I pinned and tucked and cut and pinned and tucked and cut some more! I repeated the steps until the fabric was fitted onto the pillows.
I covered the large seat cushion with a yard of the fabric. Then I cut the long pieces off from the bottom of the cushion and used the scraps to cover the sides. I needed two yards of fabric for the pillows…so I was only able to cover one of the pillows. I cut the fabric as needed to give the pillow a more fitted look. I just improvised and used what I had because I was not going back to the store!
Materials:
- Pillows to cover
- Fabric of your choice (The amount of fabric you will need will vary on your project and how many pillows you cover)
- Pins
- Large White Trash Bags (optional)
- Scissors
How to Cover a Pillow Without Sewing:
- Cover the pillows with white trash bags. This step is optional, but I did this to protect the fabric from bleeding onto the pillows underneath because of the outside elements.
- Wrap the fabric around the pillow, then pin, tuck and cut as needed. Pin around the back of the fabric so the pins aren’t noticeable. I cut the fabric as needed to give it more of a fitted look.
- Continue to pin and tuck until the pillow is covered.
- Decorate and enjoy your new covered pillows!
Now that you know how to cover a pillow without sewing, will you try to cover some pillows? What do y’all think of my porch and pillows for the 4th of July?
