Yarn wrapped letters are an easy DIY project that couldn’t get any cuter for Valentine’s Day decorations.
I decided to buy extra large letters in an X and O to use on my mantle for Valentine’s Day. I wanted to do something a little different, and that’s how I decided on yarn wrapped letters!
I’ve wrapped a wreath with yarn several years ago, but never the letters, so this was more of a trial and error kind of project. Now you can learn from my mistakes!
Since I used the extra large letters this project took longer than I expected. I just watched a marathon of Fixer Upper while I worked on my yarn wrapped letters on a very rainy and gloomy day. That’s when Mr. Southern Oaks offered to help {without me even asking him!} with the yarn wrapped letters. If you use the smaller letters this project will take half of the time to do! I’m loving the end result of the yarn wrapped letters though, so it was totally worth it in the end!
Materials for Yarn Wrapped Letters:
- Yarn in different colors {colors of your choice}
- Wooden Letters {you can find the letters at your local craft store or Wal-Mart}
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun
- Glue Sticks
- Decorative Embellishments {Optional}
Directions to Create Yarn Wrapped Letters:
- Apply hot glue to the tops of your letters and cut a few pieces of yarn into strips. Glue the strips onto the top of the letter and trim with scissors.
- Next apply the hot glue to one end of the letter. Place the yarn on top of the hot glue and quickly press it into the glue. There really isn’t a certain “technique” on applying the yarn, but I went with a horizontal wrap. Wrap the letters however your heart desires. The letters that have a hole (like the ‘O’) may be a little harder to wrap because you will have to cut the yarn into strips, wrap the yarn around and glue.
- With the ‘X’ I had to do a vertical wrap in the center. Looking back, it would have been better to wrap the middle first. Trial and error!
- Wrap the yarn around the letter and make sure it’s tight.
- Apply the hot glue as needed and continue until the letter is completely wrapped. Cut off the extra yarn and hot glue in place.
- You can add embellishments with hot glue if you’d like for extra texture.
- Decorate and enjoy your new yarn wrapped letters!
I really like the end result of the yarn wrapped letters and they add the perfect touch for my Valentine’s Day mantle {this isn’t the final look of the mantle though!}.
