I’ve had a ton of questions about my vintage door headboard, so I’m going to answer all of the questions and give you step by step instructions in a complete series!
Today is part two of the vintage door headboard series, and I’m answering all of the frequently asked questions about my vintage door headboard. Click here for Part 1: How to Make a Headboard out of Vintage Doors.
What if my doors contain lead?
Anything built before 1978 may contain lead based paint, and you don’t want to bring lead in your home. To prevent this, a fresh coat of paint or a coat of polyurethane is going to seal in any trace of lead in your vintage door headboard. P.S: That also goes for any of those gorgeous old windows, barn wood, chippy furniture you bring home–seal them with polyurethane (or paint) before bringing them inside!
What size bed frame did you use?
We bought our bed frame online from Wal-Mart, and it was about $40 bucks. The size we bought is a Full/ Queen and you put the frame together and choose the frame size you want to use. It works perfectly for our vintage door headboard!
Where did you find your doors?
I found my doors at an antique store in Mississippi and bought all three for about $100.00 to use for our wedding. You can find old doors at many antique stores, at salvage yards and I’ve even seen them out thrifting and on the side of the road. Many antique stores are going to have higher prices for their doors, so I suggest checking out salvage yards or your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
My favorite place to look for doors is at your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a non-profit home improvement store, and many times contractors will donate used materials in good condition to their local store when they are renovating houses. It’s like a picker’s paradise of junk–you can be sure to always find something new. Plus all proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity to build homes for people, which is a great cause in my book!
How much did it cost for you to make the vintage door headboard?
That’s a great question! Honestly, I really don’t know an exact number (my vintage door headboard was created before I started le blog!). I would say that it cost roughly around $200.00 to create the headboard out of doors, and that estimate is including the vintage doors and bedframe. It really depends on the cost of the doors you find and materials in your area. However, I can tell you that the vintage door headboard cost less than what you would pay at a fancy department store for a new headboard! Our vintage door headboard is one of a kind, and I know you can totally make your own, too!
Stay tuned for the third post in the series where you can shop the look; and I’m also answering the questions about the paint colors in our bedroom! 🙂
