Since I love pumpkins and a good project, I decided to paint some cheap-o pumpkins and make them pretty!
Plastic pumpkins look very realistic these days, but I wanted a neutral color palette for my pumpkins. The dollar store and Walmart have great inexpensive foam craft pumpkins. You can use any color paint that you have to keep the costs down on this project. I went with a neutral color scheme to match my home décor.
This project did not cost much, and only took a few hours to complete. The best part is that I will be able to use the pumpkins each year…oh, who am I kidding? I’ll probably decide to repaint them again in a few years…but that’s totally normal for me! I love a DIY project!
Optional Tip: Spray a coat of primer on the pumpkins before painting.
I gathered my pumpkins and I took them outside to prime. I used Krylon Color Master White Primer. This isn’t a sponsored post–I just really like the product.
For this post, I decided to only spray half of the pumpkins with the primer to compare the results.
I only needed to use one coat of paint on the pumpkins that I primed. Some of the base color still peaked through on the pumpkins that did not have the primer and needed a second coat of paint.
See the orange peaking through? Those are the pumpkins that I didn’t prime.
I decided that I loved the little specks of orange peaking through. After all, no pumpkin is perfect. The imperfections of a pumpkin is what makes them unique! I lightly brushed a second coat on the pumpkins that were not sprayed with the primer, and I embraced their tiny imperfections. Let the pumpkins dry completely.
Finally it was time to paint the details! Use a different color of paint and a small paint brush to paint the crevices of the pumpkins. Remember pumpkins are unique, so don’t worry about painting the crevices perfectly! Let the pumpkins dry completely.
Here’s my finished neutral painted pumpkins! I’ve moved the pumpkins all over the house and I love the soft color palette. Hubby pointed out that “they look like Spring colors” but he knows my love of neutrals. His favorite is the green one, and I really like the blue pumpkin.
Supplies I Used:
- Various Sized Pumpkins
- 2-3 Paint Colors (Colors of your choice)
- Paint Brushes
- White Primer, Optional (Found in the spray paint section)
Directions:
- Spray the pumpkins with the white primer outside and let them dry. (This step is optional)
- Paint pumpkins in base color of your choice.
- Let the pumpkins dry.
- Now it’s time for the details! Use a different color of paint and a small paint brush to paint the crevices of the pumpkins and let them dry.
